A Guide to Texas Hold'em Poker
Introduction to Texas Hold'em
There are many different variants of poker. The most popular
version is
Texas Hold’em. It is the easiest poker game for
beginners to learn. Compared to other poker games
like 7-Card Stud or Omaha High/Low (which are considered to be more intricate games
because of the huge number of possibilities), Texas Hold’em can be
learnt faster.
History of Texas Hold'em PokerVery little information is available about the invention of
Texas Hold’em. Officially Robstown, Texas is recognized as the
birthplace of Texas Hold'em poker. The roots are dating back to the early 1900s. From Robstown
Texas Hold'em poker game spread into Las Vegas in 1967. At that time it was known as
Hold’em. It was considered to be a thinking
man’s game. Gradually Texas Hold'em spread from Las Vegas
to whole Nevada and to California.
How to Play Texas Hold'emA complete Texas Hold’em table would ideally have nine to ten
players. The dealer position is determined by dealing a single
card to each player and the highest card will be the first
dealer. Two players to the left of the dealer put out blind
bets. The player on the left of the dealer puts a lower bet
called small blind and the next player pays the big blind. Each player is dealt two cards face down called ‘hole’ or
‘pocket cards’.
The player to the left of the big blind can take any betting action
(check, call, raise, or fold) as the first player on the first betting round.
After him betting continues clockwise around the table.
After completion of the first betting round three cards are dealt face up
on the table. These three cards
are called the Flop. They are also called “community cards”
since they can be used by everyone to make their best card
combination with their own hole cards.
The second round of betting begins after the flop. A fourth card
is then dealt face up on the board. This round is called the Turn.
The third round of betting is carried out in the same fashion.
After that the fifth and final card is dealt face up. This card is
called the River.
After the final round of betting there is a showdown. The person making the
best five-card hand by combining his pocket cards with the community cards
on the board is declared as the winner.
Texas Hold’em can be played as Limit, Pot Limit or No Limit
game. No Limit Texas Hold’em is the most sensational of the
three. In No Limit Texas Hold'em any one of the players can declare ‘All In’ and bet
everything he has in his stack on the table. In Pot Limit Texas
Hold’em a player can raise only up to the current amount in
the pot. In Limit Texas Hold’em the
betting amounts are pre-decided and equal to the big blind and two big blinds.
Summary
The primary reason for the ever increasing popularity of Texas
Hold’em is the fastness and easiness the beginners can
pick up the game. A minimum of two players are required for the Texas Hold'em poker
game to start and the target is to make the best five-card
hand using the two hole cards and five community cards.
Texas Hold’em is often referred to take a minute to learn and a lifetime to master.
